Martinmass

The festival of Martinmas is ideally celebrated on November 11th. St Martin,of Tours in France, was born in the year 316 and died on November 11th 397. He was a deeply religious man, a Roman soldier who rode upon a white horse into the city of Amiens.Ther he met with a begger, for whom he cut his red cloak in half to share it with him. That night he dreamt of the Christ, who appeared to him to say He had been the begger.Martin was about to experience the reality of the words: 'As you did to one of the least of my brothers you did to me' (Matt.25:40)The experience confirmed to him his devotion to all Mankind regardless of their station in life. St Martin has become the representative of the Christian attitude of brotherliness.
As the world grows darker during the winter months, the inner light of man wants to shine forth. On Earth the warmth of the human heart. In the Heavens the light of the stars which brighten the early evenings. In Europe a tradition has arisen of celebrating Martinmas with lantern walks and singing lantern songs.
